Frequently Asked

Questions

Getting Started

DO I NEED A REFERRAL?

No. You can book directly. If you’d like to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP - bring it with you, or send it through prior to your first appointment.

HOW DO I BOOK?

Online via our appointments page, by phone on 02 9223 5184 or through our contact form. If you’re not sure what you need, send our office an email (hello@mirrorofthought.com.au) and we’ll help you work through it.

DO I NEED TO PREPARE?

Prior to your appointment, you will receive an intake form which we like to have completed beforehand but other than that, no! Just turn up and your psychologist will guide you through the process.

Appointments

HOW LONG IS A SESSION?

Standard sessions are 50 minutes. Assessments may run longer, however we will discuss this with you if that is the case.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I COME?

It depends on you. Many people start weekly or fortnightly, spacing sessions out over time. You and your psychologist will decide together.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

We have a 48 hours’ cancellation policy. Appointments cancelled outside of this window are charged at your psychologists appointment fee. This enables our team to offer your time to another client. We know things come up - just let us know as early as you can.

CAN I USE PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE?

Yes if your policy includes coverage for psychology services. If you intend to claim through private health insurance, we will provide a tax receipt at the end of your session for you to submit for your claim.

WHAT DOES A SESSION COST?

Session fees begin at $270.00. For assessment fees, please contact our team directly to discuss.

Location & Access

WHERE ARE YOU?

Suite 1.01, Level 1, 20 Falcon Street, Crows Nest — a short walk from Crows Nest Metro.

IS THERE PARKING?

Yes. The council car park at 10 Falcon Street (next to Woolworths, entry off Burlington Street) is a minute's walk from the clinic. There's also timed street parking nearby, though it fills quickly during the day.

IS THE CLINIC ACCESSIBLE?

Not quite, sorry. Our rooms are on Level 1 and there's no lift, so there's one flight of stairs to get to us. If that's tricky, we offer telephone or video sessions — or give us a call and we'll find a way that suits you.

Other Questions

IS WHAT I SAY CONFIDENTIAL?

A psychologist has an ethical and legal responsibility to protect your rights to confidentiality and privacy, however there are exceptions required by law (for example, if someone is at serious risk of harm). We’ll explain these clearly at your first session.

DO YOU PROVIDE REPORTS FOR LEGAL MATTERS?

No. We don't prepare reports or provide evidence for court, family law, immigration, compensation or other legal proceedings, and we don't offer medico-legal assessments.

IS A PSYCHOLOGIST THE SAME AS A COUNSELLOR?

No. Psychologists complete at least six years of training, and are registered with AHPRA, which qualifies them to assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions. A counsellor is not a protected title and can be used by anyone.

WHAT IF I AM IN CRISIS?

We are not a crisis service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000. For urgent support, Lifeline is 13 11 14 (24 hours) and the Mental Health Line is 1800 011 511.
